Commemorating the shared history of all Australians on ANZAC Day

On the eve of ANZAC Day 2013, the Federation of Ethnic Communities’ Councils of
Australia (FECCA) has encouraged all Australians to join together in commemorating the lives of those lost in battle and their legacy that has laid the foundation for contemporary Australia’s rich cultural diversity and community spirit.

"ANZAC Day is a time of national significance and an opportunity for all Australians to engage in solemn reflection, including members of Australia’s culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities”, said FECCA Chair, Mr Pino Migliorino.

He continued, “the meaning of ANZAC day is embedded in the Australian psyche, and transcending its roots in Gallipoli, speaks to the unity of a nation, and the unity amongst Australians who will stand side-by-side on 25 April to commemorate their ancestors lost”.

"Australians of diverse cultural backgrounds are generally well represented in ANZAC day celebrations each year and are sensitive of, and respectful to, the spirit of this important day," Mr Migliorino said.

“It is significant”, continued Mr Migliorino, “to recognise the contributions of CALD Australians and their ancestors in fighting towards the allied cause, and that their legacy has fostered not only a strong and robust Australian society for all to presently enjoy, but one that is inevitably shaped and enhanced by its cultural diversity”.

He concluded, "this ANZAC Day, FECCA implores all Australians to pause and reflect upon the shared experiences that have forged our national spirit, and commemorate the sacrifices of those who laid the foundations for a tolerant, inclusive and multicultural Australian society”.
